One morning, I was hit with the Flu just before my first martial arts test in a new system. Despite feeling weak, I pressed on, knowing that this test would test my skill in adapting to a new martial arts system and the new language of movement.

Martial arts, as in life, exist as more than losing or winning a battle, whether internal or external; Martial Arts, like life, can have moments when we face setbacks when life seems to get the better of us. There’s a profound saying by Bruce Lee – ‘Be water, my friend.‘ This means cultivating adaptability, not brute force, and flowing around obstacles with persistence. This wisdom rings true when we face setbacks or feel defeated.

We can control our response to setbacks and defeats. So, if you ever feel stuck, pause…Breathe deeply and ask yourself: ‘What one small step forward can I take right now?’ It might look as simple as standing up, putting your clothes on, walking, or even savoring your next sip of your tea. These small steps build the path to overcoming resistance to do something in the face of setbacks or challenges.

Now I Return to my story. After an intense three-hour test, I fortunately emerged as one of the highest scorers despite feeling less than optimal. But more than that, the test challenged my mental resolve and physical endurance, unlike any other challenge I have faced in the past.
